Steelers 2026 Free Agent Analysis – CB James Pierre

Steelers Free Agent Analysis: James Pierre

Position: Cornerback

Experience: 6 Years

Free Agent Status: Unrestricted

2025 Salary Cap Hit: $972,778

2025 Season Breakdown:

The Steelers saw something in James Pierre as a college free agent in 2020, but is he finally showing everything he has? The sixth-year veteran had by far his best season last year, though it also had to do with opportunity. Especially late in the year, thanks to injuries, he had a chance to log some serious snaps. That’s particularly impressive, given that he barely made the roster in the first place.

During the offseason, the Steelers signed CBs Darius Slay and Brandin Echols in free agency, then traded for Jalen Ramsey. With Joey Porter Jr. and Cory Trice Jr., and the Steelers drafting Donte Kent, James Pierre seemed like a longshot to stick. But he faced long odds before and survived, and his resilience continues to serve him well.

From a performance perspective, Pierre almost looked like a different defender last year. It shows in the numbers, recording 11 passes defensed, matching his total from his five previous seasons. Several of those could or should have been interceptions, but he did land one.

In all, Pierre played 376 snaps on defense, logging 30 tackles and returning a fumble for a touchdown. But did he show enough for the Steelers to see him as a potential full-time starter?

Free Agency Outlook:

Despite the growth he showed last season, James Pierre won’t command a lot of money in free agency. Former college free agents who are late bloomers need to show a lot more for a lot longer than Pierre did before they crack the greater consciousness of the league. In other words, it shouldn’t be too hard, or costly, for the Steelers to re-sign him.

And they probably shouldn’t count on Pierre being one of their starting outside cornerbacks. It may be an acceptable fallback option, but it shouldn’t be your Plan A. Not, at least, before he puts in a complete year’s body of work that shows he can sustainably deliver starter-level play.

The Steelers havea long list of free agents this year, but not absolutely can’t-lose names, at least debatably. Aaron Rodgers is the presumptive exception, the team already going on record expressing the desire that he return. While the list includes significant players like Kenneth Gainwell and Isaac Seumalo, they are not overwhelmingly pressing priorities. The quarterback question supersedes all, and I don’t foresee another Mason Rudolph spring. There are some choice role players, but they wouldn’t fall apart if they lost the entire lot.

And with the Steelers introducing almost an entirely new coaching regime, the free agency direction is unclear. No doubt we will witness how things evolve in the time between February and March. It’s possible they make some significant moves, a surprising cut, work on a bold trade. After all, this is a new scheme into which they are now building.
