Thiago is set to return to Anfield for the first time in March after he retired from football at the end of the 2023/24 season.
Since hanging his boots up, the former Liverpool midfielder has quietly been putting in the hours on the training pitches of Catalonia and in the boardrooms of Spanish lower-league football.
Thiago transitioned almost immediately into coaching, linking up with Hansi Flick at Barcelona. Initially brought in on a short-term basis to help Flick settle and add a tactical voice on the training ground, he has since been made an official first-team assistant coach.
Away from the Camp Nou, Thiago has also stepped into club ownership alongside former Barcelona teammate Jordi Alba, investing in UE L’Hospitalet, a historic Catalan side currently competing in the Spanish fifth tier, with the aim of driving them back up the pyramid.
Now, though, his next stop is somewhere far more familiar to Liverpool supporters. Thiago has been confirmed as part of the Liverpool FC Legends squad to face Borussia Dortmund Legends at Anfield on Saturday March 28, making his first appearance in the club’s annual charity fixture. The 33-year-old spent four seasons on Merseyside, making 98 appearances, scoring three goals
His return will see him join a cast that includes Steven Gerrard, Sami Hyypiä and Pepe Reina, with Jürgen Klopp assisting Sir Kenny Dalglish in the dugout, as all proceeds go to LFC Foundation and its community programmes.
These annual legends fixture has become a cornerstone event for LFC Foundation, with the previous nine matches raising over £9 million in support.
All proceeds from this year’s game will benefit LFC Foundation, Forever Reds, and the BVB Foundation, funding employability programmes that help people find work, gain qualifications, and develop new skills. The initiative plays a crucial role in the Foundation’s ambitious strategy of supporting 500,000 people per season by 2030.
