Packers face tough decision as Malik Willis predicted for major payday

The Green Bay Packers could see multiple notable offensive contributors depart this offseason, including one player who has quietly become an important piece over the last two years. Backup quarterback Malik Willis, 26, earned the trust of both coaches and fans after filling in admirably for Jordan Love during critical stretches in each of the past two seasons, and he is now set to hit free agency in March.

The Packers would certainly prefer to keep Willis in the fold, but the former third-round selection has shown enough growth and poise to warrant consideration for a starting opportunity as he enters his fifth NFL season.

Several organizations could present logical landing spots, such as the Cleveland Browns or the Arizona Cardinals. Still, the teams generating the most chatter surrounding a potential Willis deal are the Miami Dolphins and the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Miami recently brought in former Packers defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley as head coach and hired ex–Green Bay vice president of player personnel Jon-Eric Sullivan as general manager, creating clear connections to Willis within the organization.

Over four NFL seasons, Willis has connected on 67.7 percent of his throws for 1,322 yards, tossing six touchdowns against three interceptions in 22 games, including six starts where he posted a 3-3 record. He has also made an impact with his legs, totaling 405 rushing yards and four touchdowns.

The main obstacle to a reunion is financial. Green Bay simply isn’t in position to allocate starter-level money to a backup, especially with Jordan Love already under contract for three more years on a $220 million agreement.

According to Spotrac’s current estimate, Willis is expected to command roughly $35.5 million per year on a two-year deal, putting his projected total value in the neighborhood of $71 million.
