The NFL continues to evolve as the biggest major professional sports league in the United States. Every year, the competition makes billions in revenue, as it constantly breaks viewership records. With the increasing popularity, the league would be in a position to plug early (2029) on its current contracts (except ESPN, which runs through 2030).

John Ourand of Puck explained what a new round of TV deals would mean for the league. He envisions that, unless networks offer a bigger package to the league beforehand, the NFL would pull out of its current deals to ask for much more money.
Ourand notes that the NBA’s “cost per viewer hour” triples the NFL’s current figure. The league gets $10 billion per year only from broadcast rights. This could increase the current $312.5 million payment per season each team receives to $625 million.

Officials would try to offer options to every network interested. Ourand added that streamers like Netflix and YouTube would get five-game packages. More ambitious plans, such as Amazon trying to move from Thursday to the Sunday night slot, could be on the table, too.

While they might be preparing to charge networks more money, the NFL is reportedly “furious” over the NBA and NBC’s agreement for Sunday Night basketball. The association will receive $2.45 billion per year, while the NFL makes slightly less than $2 billion per year.

Roger Goodell’s league draws much more viewership than the NBA, making its product much more valuable. This likely will get addressed when the league starts to negotiate with networks in perhaps three years.
