Rams' Situation With Kliff Kingsbury Just Got Even More Curious

On Feb. 6, former Arizona Cardinals head coach Kliff Kingsbury joined the Los Angeles Rams.

The hiring wasn’t too long after Rams offensive coordinator Mike LaFleur left to become the next head coach of the Cardinals.

A source told Newsweek that the Rams had not decided what Kingsbury’s role would be under head coach Sean McVay. At the time, Los Angeles had not yet named an offensive coordinator.

Pass game coordinator Nate Scheelhaase seemed to be an obvious coach to promote. He was a top target for the offensive coordinator job with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers before he focused on the head coaching gig of the Cleveland Browns.

But the Browns chose to hire Todd Monken as their next head coach.

Per ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Rams are giving the offensive coordinator job to Scheelhaase. With an interesting twist, Los Angeles will make quarterbacks coach Dave Ragone its co-offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach.

“Sources: the Los Angeles Rams are promoting pass-game coordinator Nate Scheelhaase to offensive coordinator, and making QB coach Dave Ragone the co-offensive coordinator/QB coach,” Schefter posted on X. “Scheelhaase interviewed for five head coaching jobs during this hiring cycle. But now, the NFL's final OC opening has been filled in a uniquely LA way.”

It remains to be seen where the Rams decide to put Kingsbury on the staff for 2026 after promoting Scheelhaase and Ragone this offseason.

No doubt, the Rams will have one of the best offensive coaching staffs in 2026.

Kingsbury, a former head coach at Texas Tech, is returning to Southern California a few seasons after he spent 2023 as a senior offensive analyst in quarterback Caleb Williams’ final season at USC.

Kingsbury left the Trojans to become the offensive coordinator for the Washington Commanders in 2024, helping rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels earn NFL Rookie of the Year.

The Commanders and Kingsbury mutually parted ways after the 2025 season.
