Green Bay Packers predicted to re-sign former 1st round pick ahead of NFL free agency

The Green Bay Packers have a number of impending free agents that will not be retained by the team when the new league year begins. Rasheed Walker, for example, is not going to be brought back because the Packers already have planned for Jordan Morgan to take over at left tackle. The fact that Walker is projected to make $20 million a year on his next contract does not help his chances of returning to Green Bay.

Similarly, Romeo Doubs is not likely going to be re-signed by the Packers because of the depth they already have built up at the wide receiver position. While his projected salary will be around $12 million a year, Green Bay simply will not pay that while they have their current group of pass catchers, most of whom are on rookie contracts.

Linebacker Quay Walker is another player who will hit free agency once the new league year starts. But while the Packers may let others walk, they are more likely to bring him back for 2026, and possibly beyond.

When the Packers declined Walker’s fifth-year option prior to the 2025 NFL season, it was with the understanding that they wanted to sign him to a long-term extension instead. However, that never ended up happening. Now, the former first round pick is slated to hit free agency and could go anywhere.

Despite this, Fox Sports believes that Green Bay and Walker will come to an agreement and that he will return to the Packers:

“Walker, 25, does a bit of everything for Green Bay — four straight 100-tackle seasons, including 128 this past year, and he’s active in the opposing backfield with nine career sacks and 29 tackles for loss. The Packers declined his fifth-year option, opting not to pay him $14.7 million in 2026, and he’ll likely get about $10 million a year.

“Pro Football Focus doesn’t think much of him, ranking him 76th amongNFLlinebackers, with his pass coverage skills bringing him down.”

Prediction: Re-signs with Packers

As noted above, Walker is not graded very highly by PFF, and he does struggle mightily in pass coverage. At times, too, he tends to over-pursue ball carriers because of a poor initial play diagnosis.

That being said, he is incredibly fast for a linebacker and is well-respected among his teammates, who voted him a team captain last year. While his return is not a guarantee, it would not be surprising at all if he was re-signed.
