NFL Writer Urges Vikings To Land Ex-Patriots QB As Competition For J.J. McCarthy

The NFL new year league is set to kick off on March 11, and there could be a handful of trades that shake up the league.

One player who might change teams this offseason is former New England Patriots quarterback Mac Jones, who is currently the San Francisco 49ers' backup.

Teams looking to bring in a quarterback to rival their starting quarterback could be calling the 49ers about Jones. Bleacher Report's Alex Ballentine thinks the Minnesota Vikings should make a move for Jones.

Ballentine has the Vikings trading 2026 third-round pick (No. 82) and a 2027 conditional pick (starts as a fourth-rounder and goes up to a second based on snaps or performance) to the 49ers or Jones.

"It's hard to imagine the Vikings moving forward with no competition for McCarthy," Ballentine wrote on Friday. "Minnesota could offer a late Day 2 pick in this year's draft with a conditional pick that's based on Jones' impact next season. That would be a creative way to add a quarterback while managing a rough cap situation in Minnesota. At minimum, this ensures Justin Jefferson has someone to get him the ball next year."

The 49ers signed Jones to a two-year, $8.41 million contract last offseason. He played in 11 games, starting eight, stepping in for the injured Brock Purdy, and threw for 2,151 yards and 13 touchdowns.

Minnesota would be wise to bring in some competition for its young starting quarterback, J.J. McCarthy.
