Blazers convert wing Sidy Cissoko to standard contract

PORTLAND Ore. (KPTV) - The Portland Trail Blazers have converted the two-way contract of wing Sidy Cissoko to a standard NBA deal, the team announced Friday.

Terms of the deal were not disclosed, but ESPN’s Shams Charania reports that Cissoko signed a two-year contract.

As the team already had a maximum 15 players under standard contracts, guard Rayan Rupert was waived in a corresponding move to make room for Cissoko on the roster.

Under two-way contracts, which are non-guaranteed, players can play up to 50 games with an NBA club, while spending the remainder of their time in the NBA G League.

Cissoko reached the 50-game threshold prior to the NBA All-Star break. Over 50 games, including 24 starts, the third-year wing averaged 6.5 points over 22 minutes per game.

The French native is known primarily for his prowess on the defensive end of the floor, where he has averaged nearly a steal per game this season.

The senator framed the proposal as a long-term investment in what he called “Oregon’s Arena” and the state’s economic future.

Cissoko, 21, appeared in five games for the Blazers last season, after starting his career with the San Antonio Spurs - where he was unable to crack the rotation after being drafted out of the G League in 2023.

Fellow two-way contract guard Caleb Love, who entered play Friday having already appeared in 45 games as an undrafted rookie, faces a similar games restriction.

Rupert, also from France, appeared in 139 games over three seasons with the Blazers, struggling to find consistent playing time over his tenure.

The 21-year-old guard was drafted 43rd overall by Portland in the 2023 NBA Draft - one pick ahead of Cissoko.
