On this day in 1972, a remarkable friendly match took place at Villa Park, drawing an impressive crowd of 54,437 spectators. The Third Division side Aston Villa hosted Brazilian giants Santos, primarily to witness the legendary Pele in action. Despite the cold Monday night, fans were treated to a dazzling display by the Brazilian icon. However, it was Edu who found the net for Santos in their 2-1 defeat to Aston Villa.

The football world was rocked on 21st February 1995 when Arsenal manager George Graham was sacked following a Premier League investigation. The investigation revealed that Graham had accepted a £425,000 ‘bung’ from agent Rune Hauge during the transfers of John Jensen and Pal Lyderson, both clients of Hauge. Later that day, under the guidance of caretaker manager Stewart Houston, Arsenal secured a 1-0 victory over Nottingham Forest, marking their first home league win since October.

In a dramatic Premier League encounter at The Valley on 21st February 2004, Charlton Athletic faced Blackburn Rovers. With Charlton leading 2-1, Blackburn’s goalkeeper Brad Friedel ventured forward for a last-minute corner and remarkably scored the equaliser. Liverpool made headlines on 21st February 2007 by becoming the first English club to win a Champions League match at the Nou Camp, defeating Barcelona 2-1. However, the spotlight was also on a pre-match incident involving Liverpool players Craig Bellamy and John Arne Riise. The duo had a confrontation during a team bonding evening in Portugal, reportedly involving a golf club. Both players were selected for the Barcelona match and scored a goal each. Bellamy’s goal celebration, mimicking a golf swing, became a memorable talking point.

In a Conference fixture on 21st February 2009, Weymouth faced Rushden & Diamonds under challenging circumstances. Due to a financial crisis, Weymouth fielded a youth team, resulting in a 9-0 defeat. This match set records as Weymouth’s heaviest defeat and Rushden & Diamonds’ largest victory, equalling the biggest margin in Conference history. Weymouth struggled for the remainder of the season, earning just one point from 14 matches and scoring only four goals, leading to their relegation. Despite their financial woes, Weymouth survived, while Rushden & Diamonds faced their own financial collapse, being expelled from the Conference in June 2011 and going bust a month later.
