Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce has been named alongside teammate Patrick Mahomes in a federal trademark infringement lawsuit filed by sneaker company 1587 Sneakers. The suit claims the celebrity-owned steakhouse 1587 Prime in Kansas City illegally uses the “1587” branding, which the sneaker brand asserts it established first.

Travis Kelce Sued in Trademark Dispute Over “1587 Prime” Restaurant Name with Patrick Mahomes
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
[Court documents reviewed by ESPN](https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/47989230/patrick-mahomes-travis-kelce-sued-trademark-infringement) show that 1587 Sneakers began selling shoes under the “1587” name on April 13, 2023, and filed its trademark application in October 2025 (still pending with the USPTO). In contrast, Mahomes, Kelce, and hospitality group Noble 33 applied for the “1587 Prime” trademark in December 2023 — after opening the restaurant — by combining Kelce’s jersey number (87) with Mahomes’ (15).
Trademark attorney Josh Gerben (Gerben IP), speaking generally and not involved in the case, told ESPN:
> “The legal question revolves around the unregistered rights that the sneaker company claimed before it filed its trademark applications last year.”
According to ESPN:
> The suit alleges that “scores of consumers” have contacted 1587 Sneakers believing the company is affiliated with 1587 Prime. The plaintiffs’ attorney, Ezra Salami, declined an ESPN request for evidence to support that claim, but he said it will be produced should the case reach trial.
>
> “From the onset, we have communicated a sincere belief that there is room for mutual respect and understanding,” 1587 Sneakers co-founder Adam King said in a written statement. “That belief has not changed, and we continue to hope to resolve this matter amicably.”
>
> The sneaker company is asking for the restaurant group to no longer use the name, saying it causes confusion. The company also wants the restaurant to stop selling goods with the name on it and seeks to be awarded unspecified damages.
>
> A publicist for Kelce declined to comment, and a representative for Mahomes did not respond to a message from ESPN seeking comment.
Travis Kelce, a three-time Super Bowl champion and one of the NFL’s most marketable stars, has not issued a public response to the lawsuit. The future Hall of Famer has significantly expanded his off-field business interests in recent years, including the high-profile 1587 Prime steakhouse partnership with Mahomes.
Neither Kelce, Mahomes, nor Noble 33 has commented on the suit as of February 20, 2026. The case remains active in federal court, with potential implications for the restaurant’s branding and operations.
This legal dispute adds to the growing list of off-field headlines for Travis Kelce during the Chiefs’ offseason.
