Liverpool agreed a £60m deal with Rennes in January to bring the defender to the club this summer.

Considered one of the hottest defensive prospects on the planet, it was seen as a major coup when Liverpool secured the signing of highly sought-after 22-year-old defender Jeremy Jacuqet.

With the Reds also wrapping up a deal for the extremely talented Giovanni Leoni last summer, the future of Liverpool’s backline looked bright.

However, football is a sport often filled with bad luck, and the duo have experienced a fair share of that.

Leoni tore his ACL on his Liverpool debut at the start of this season, ruling him out for the majority of the season.

Jeremy Jacquet then suffered a significant shoulder injury just days after the confirmation arrived that Liverpool had struck a deal to sign the defender.

A French football reporter has now delivered a worrying update on that shoulder injury.

Francois Rauzy took to X to deliver this update: “Kamara and Frankowski are out, just like Jacquet, whose return before the end of the season is not guaranteed. Discussions ongoing with Liverpool on the health status of Jacquet and the next steps to follow regarding the central defender.”

If the young defender does sit out the rest of the season, it will mean that he will not have played a competitive game since the first week of February, a situation that is far from ideal for a £60m signing arriving at a club and hoping to hit the ground running.

The young defender could then face a disrupted pre-season and if the story of Alexander Isak is anything to go by, it is proof that player take a while to get going if that crucial time of the year doesn’t go to plan.

Arne Slot will be looking to avoid similar fates than the likes of Jeremie Frimpong and Giovanni Leoni who were two defensive additions that have spent notable spells on the sidelines.

Liverpool are keen for Jacquet to undergo surgery as soon as possible, to give him a fighting chance of arriving on Merseyside fully healthy and raring to go.
