Atlético de Madrid president Enrique Cerez has shot down reports about Julián Álvarez, as the likes of Arsenal, Chelsea and Barcelona circle.
El Desmarque cover comments from Cerezo today. He’s sent out a clear message about the Argentine as rumours continue to swirl.
Sport Witness have covered several of those reports over the last few weeks. All indications are that Arsenal and Chelsea could make big moves for the 26-year-old this summer.
Arsenal and Chelsea financial power
A report at the beginning of February even stated that they were ready to break the bank for his signature.
A follow‑up report yesterday added that both sides have the financial power to blow Barcelona out of the water if they choose.
Arsenal, in particular, seem keen on Álvarez. Indeed, a report this week explained that the Gunners made a big €100m move for the striker last summer.
Álvarez and Atlético pushed that away, but the latter remain concerned about it. Despite efforts to secure the Argentine on a new deal and fend off interest, links with Barcelona refuse to go away.
Numerous reports in Spain continue to push their interest. Although that may be a pressure tactic as the two sides meet in the Copa del Rey on Tuesday.
Cerezo hits back
Cerezo is more than aware of the rumours, but refused to fuel them in any way, shape or form when asked.
“They can say whatever they want and talk whatever they want,” he said.
“But everyone knows that Julián Álvarez is an Atlético de Madrid player. He has a contract with Atlético de Madrid. If he’s an Atlético de Madrid player, it’s because he’s an Atlético de Madrid player.”
While that is clearly Cerezo shooting down the rumours, it’s clear they’re causing concern at the Wanda Metropolitano. And there’s no indication that they’re going to slow down before the summer either.
