(Video): Chelsea down to ten after stupid red card for key defender

Wesley Fofana has been given a red card after picking up a second yellow for a nasty – and foolish – tackle on Burnley’s James Ward-Prowse.

This was already a nervy game. Now it’s going to be a horrible last 20 minutes.

Chelsea had scored an early goal but couldn’t find the second. Several chances were wasted, but they were still in charge. Now the worst possible things has happened – the Blues have been reduced to ten men.

Wesley Fofana was booked in the first half, and has now been handed a second yellow.

It was just so unnecessary. James Ward-Prowse was under pressure and actually playing the ball backwards to his defenders. For some reason, Fofana decided to lunge in at that moment, and he didn’t come close to the ball. The Frenchman just got a chunk of Ward-Prose instead.

It wasn’t a deliberate action to plant his studs into the midfielder’s ankle – but he took the risk it might happen when it really wasn’t needed.

Foolish Fofana gets it all wrong with immature decision

Wesley Fofana trudges off.

Wesley Fofana trudges off.

Fofana is supposed to be the mature, senior defender out there. This discipline problem runs through the whole team it seems.

To make things worse, Fofana will now be banned for the Arsenal game next Sunday. What a disaster for the Blues. If they drop points now, it could prove to be a very costly decision.

One piece of bad news today was the injury to Estevao. Liam Rosenior gave an update on that issue before kick off this afternoon.

Chelsea took the lead through Joao Pedro, who put the finishing touches on a flowing move up the pitch involving Pedro Neto and Moises Caicedo.
