The former teammate of the new all-time Premier League record appearance maker has shown his appreciation.
Not many footballers leave their mark on the sport that will transcend time.
It is fair to say James Milner has done just that this afternoon.
His start for Brighton against Brentford marked his 654th appearance in the Premier League making him the outright record Premier League appearance maker.
It is the former Liverpool midfielder’s latest achievement in a career full of them.
Making his Premier League debut 23 years ago, he has played a vital role in every team he has featured for across spells at Leeds United, Aston Villa, Newcastle United, Manchester City, Liverpool and now Brighton.
Andy Robertson, who spent six years with James Milner on Merseyside, has released a touching message to his former teammate on Instagram.
The post reads:
“The Kop is right, there’s only one James Milner!”
“Most Premier League appearances ever. An unbelievable achievement and one I can’t see ever getting overtaken.”
“I’m sure everyone will talk about mentality and character and they’re right but what a footballer. Technical ability and creativity. I feel very lucky I got to play with you for so long.”
“Cracks me up how much the man himself will be hating all the fuss and attention. Suck it up Jimmy… gonna have to accept there’s a lot of people out there who appreciate how good you are.”
“Proud to be able to call you my mate.”
The pair won all there was to win during their time together at Liverpool, and their friendship has lasted even beyond Milner’s departure from the club.
