Liverpool fans are now about to see a dream trio live at Anfield, but there's a cruel twist - opinion

It’s that time of year once again when some favourite faces from Liverpool’s history dust off their boots and get back on the Anfield pitch.

This year, the Liverpool Legends will face Borussia Dortmund during the March international break, with some exciting names being added to the squad.

With two of his old teams facing off, it feels only right that Jurgen Klopp returns to the Anfield bench, and he will do so as one of Kenny Dalglish’s assistants.

On Friday, it was announced that Thiago Alcantara would make his Legends debut, and it will be a delight to see the Spaniard back in Red, if only for a charity match.

Klopp and Thiago should have done even greater things together at Liverpool, but just imagine how they could have dominated had they had Steven Gerrard to call upon as well. Luckily, those inside Anfield on March 28th will get a glimpse into what could’ve been one of the Premier League’s best midfield partnerships, as Thiago and Gerrard finally link up.

Thiago would have been a dream partner for Gerrard

During his years with the Reds, Gerrard named Xabi Alonso as his favourite midfield partner. While that is a strong pick from the Scouser, we think he would’ve enjoyed playing alongside Thiago even more.

Just as, if not more, technically gifted than his countryman, the former Liverpool No. 6 could have been the perfect foil for Gerrard’s all-action style.

Ready to do the dirty work as well as the eye-catching on-the-ball magic, Thiago would have given Gerrard the freedom to plough forward while also giving him a top-quality player to combine with.

Had their hey-days matched up, these two would have taken some stopping. Blood and thunder matched with grace and balance, they would have surely won the lot together.

Gerrard has continuously proven during these occasions that he has not lost his ability, and with Thiago less than two years removed from retirement, fans at Anfield should be treated to a glimpse of what that could have been like.

Who else will play in the Legends game?

As a recently departed Liverpool player who was hugely popular during his time with the club, Thiago will likely be the biggest draw for supporters to attend the charity match this March. The prospect of seeing him and Gerrard link up with Klopp in the dugout is certainly an enticing one.

There will be at least one more debut as well, though, as Pepe Reina returns to Anfield after last playing for the club in 2012.

The likes of Sami Hyypia, Martin Skrtel, Vladimir Smicer and Jerzy Dudek will also be involved, as well as Liverpool women’s legend Natasha Dowie.

It is always fun to see how these players from different eras react to playing together, and as they watch Thiago and Gerrard, supporters can pretend they are witnessing the two in their pomp, pulling opposition midfields apart and dominating the Premier League.
