"Could open the door': Selling Liverpool's most frustrating player could lead to a major new incoming

Liverpool could sell Cody Gakpo this summer if they can identify a suitable replacement.

Football Insider recently reported that Bayern Munich will not make a move to sign Gakpo in the summer after they were in talks with Liverpool to sign him last year.

Of course, the reason is because they went on to sign Luis Diaz for £65,5m, and they hardly needed both players. The Colombian has gone on to excel at the Allianz Arena, scoring 19 goals and registering 15 assists.

Gakpo has been a source of frustration for Liverpool fans this season and perhaps vindicated Bayern’s decision to sign Diaz instead. Gakpo has just seven goals and four assists this season.

Liverpool plan to sell Cody Gakpo if they can identify a replacement

In a new revelation, Football Insider now report that Liverpool will accept offers for Gakpo if they can find a replacement.

Speaking on Transfer Insider podcast, Peter O’Rourke explained: “If Liverpool were to bring in another left-sided attacker in the summer then maybe that potentially could open the door for a move away for Cody Gakpo.

“But he’s under contract until 2030…by all accounts, he remains happy at the club even though he does come in for a bit of flak from some Liverpool fans for his performances.

“He’s clearly still seen as a key man by Arne Slot, because he keeps picking him.”

Liverpool sold the wrong winger in the summer, they should have kept Luis Diaz

It was clear in the summer, but it’s even more obvious now. Liverpool made an error letting Diaz go and not replacing him.

Gakpo is Liverpool’s only senior left-wing, with Rio Ngumoha too green to be trusted to start regularly – or at least that’s how Arne Slot views things.

Imagining an attack with Diaz, Hugo Ekitike, Florian Wirtz and Mohamed Salah is a waste of time because we will never see it, but the frustration of seeing Gakpo repeatedly cut in with little to no end product has made fans realise that Liverpool need a better winger than the Dutchman.
