Carlow crush Waterford to maintain Div 4 win streak

Carlow maintained their positive form in Division 4 of the National Football League when they were too good for Waterford at Netwatch Cullen Park on Saturday.

Dermot Ryan converted an early 45 for the visitors after the Carlow defence were been stretched and were lucky not to concede a goal.

In reply, Conor Doyle equalised and Colm Hulton landed a two-pointer. Chris Blake also raised a white flag as The Barrowsiders built on their momentum.

By the time the only goal of the game came on 23 minutes, the home side were leading 0-09 to 0-04.

When Sean Murphy powered through the centre of defence he was involved in a quick exchange of passes with Niall Roche, and the experienced marauder punched home from close range.

The home side created further goal chances, but Conor Crowley and Roche both hit the woodwork. While goals were hard to come by, Hulton still finished the first half with three two-pointers from play.

Ryan was Waterford's leading attacker, ending the half with five points, which included a two-point free. At the interval, Carlow led 1-14 to 0-08.

Waterford scored the opening point of the second half, with Alan Dunwoody coming forward from deep to find the posts. Carlow were not in full gear at this stage, but there was never any doubt that they could move up one or two more if they had to.

Waterford almost scored a goal when Michael O’Brien gathered a Carlow kickout, but to the relief of the home net-minder, Ben McCarron, the ball hopped over the bar for an opportunistic two-pointer.

As the game petered out, substitute, Darragh Foley converted a Carlow two-pointer. It was easy in the end as the home side outscored their rivals by 0-07 to 0-02 in the final ten minutes.
