Newcastle beat Azerbaijan champions Qarabag 6-1 in the first leg of their Champions League play-off on Wednesday night, and Howe opted to make just one change from the 5,000-mile round trip as Jacob Ramsey came in for Harvey Barnes.
Nico O’Reilly gave Man City the lead 14 minutes before the Magpies levelled through Lewis Hall’s deflected effort. But the scoreline was level for just five minutes as O’Reilly restored the hosts’ lead by getting on the end of Erling Haaland’s cross.
Dan Burn thought he had equalised on the brink of half-time when he headed home Sandro Tonali’s in-swinging delivery, but his celebrations were cut short by the offside flag.
United saw a lot more of the ball in the second-half but didn’t have enough to break Man City down as their three-match winning streak came to an end.
Pep Guardiola’s side are unbeaten in their last 22 Premier League home games against Newcastle, winning each of the last 17.
