Dillon Brooks of the Phoenix Suns was issued a one-game suspension by the NBA, but it is by no means the first ban given out this season.

The Phoenix Suns received terrible news during Saturday’s game against the Orlando Magic after Dillon Brooks left the game with a broken hand. Brooks only played for 7 minutes in the first quarter before the injury forced him out. The Suns doctors ruled Brooks out for the rest of the game quickly to put fear into fans about the injury being severe.

A post-game update confirmed that Brooks suffered a broken hand and will be out of action indefinitely moving forward. ESPN’s Shams Charania reported the following:

“Phoenix Suns guard Dillon Brooks has sustained a broken left hand and will be sidelined, sources tell ESPN. Doctors will meet to determine a timetable. Brooks is a key part to the playoff-contending Suns, averaging 21+ points and 3+ rebounds this season. Difficult injury blow.”

The timetable is unknown since the injury just happened hours ago and a stronger update should be provided during the week. Previous instances of NBA players suffering from a broken hand usually see a timetable of 1-2 months out of action. Phoenix will have to navigate without one of their most important players.

Suns May Be Toast Without Dillon Brooks

Brooks has been the biggest addition to the Suns with the best season of his entire career so far. Phoenix acquired Brooks and Jalen Green from the Houston Rockets in the blockbuster offseason trade for Kevin Durant. Brooks has been Devin Booker’s sidekick and even stepped up to be the best player in games with Booker out due to injury.

Booker is ruled out for a week to add more fear of his injury seeing the Suns forced to play without their top two players. Green has only played in a handful of games this season, but his health is closer to 100% right at the perfect time. Phoenix will need Green to be a top scorer to keep their current seventh seed status.

The Suns have overachieved this season to hold the top play-in spot and are right behind a couple of higher seeds for a guaranteed playoff spot. Winning without Brooks will be extremely tough, but they must keep pace with other West teams or will risk missing the playoffs.

When To Expect Dillon Brooks Back

The timetable of a one-month best-case return and two-month worst-case return sees a likely return this season. Brooks missing one month would get him back on the court at the end of the regular season to help their chances of adding more wins.

Two months would see him returning closer to play-in games and having to deliver in must-win scenarios. Phoenix’s best bet is having Booker return soon and thrive as the leader to pick up victories to keep their current pace going strong.

Brooks has helped the Suns overachieve with the best season of his career, but the other role players must step up now. Phoenix must find a way to stay afloat and at least have the chance of play-in games to make the playoffs once Brooks is healthy enough to play again. Unfortunately, the injury makes the path significantly harder now.
