Lakers legend doubts LeBron, Doncic, Reaves can carry the team

Lakers legend Byron Scott doubts that LeBron James, Luka Doncic, and Austin Reaves have enough support to win the NBA title this season. He says the team lacks depth compared to top contenders like the Oklahoma City Thunder.

Former Los Angeles Lakers star and three-time NBA champion Byron Scott isn't buying into the current Lakers' title hype.

On his Fast Break podcast, Scott bluntly stated that the 34–21 Lakers don't have the depth to compete for a championship.

"They ain't winning no championship this year," Scott said. "Listen, we all bleed purple and gold, but again, you got to be 100. They ain't winning no championship this year. They don't have enough. They don't have enough. I mean, they got obviously three great players, right? But you need 10. OKC won the championship last year 'cause they were 10 deep."

Scott pointed to the importance of team depth and chemistry, comparing the Lakers to last year's Thunder squad.

"Everybody don't care about scoring," he said. "They care about winning. That's that team in Oklahoma right now. They are so connected as a group, but they're 10 deep. The Lakers aren't 10 deep. If they get that this year, they got a chance, but I don't think that's gonna happen."

While the Lakers boast Luka Doncic, LeBron James, and Austin Reaves, Scott argued that their supporting cast isn't enough.

He highlighted weaknesses in the center rotation, with Deandre Ayton's early–season form declining and Jaxson Hayes providing inconsistent impact. Wing and guard options like Rui Hachimura, Luke Kennard, Marcus Smart, and Jake LaRavia also leave gaps.
