Jamie Carragher believes Dominik Szoboszlai is Liverpool’s best option at right-back - even when all of the Reds’ options are fit.

The Hungarian once again fills in on the right side of the defense as the Reds face Nottingham Forest today, having already done so on a few other occasions this season, including against both Manchester City and Arsenal.

With Jeremie Frimpong not expected back until at least next weekend’s game against West Ham and Conor Bradley out for the rest of the season, Liverpool has been short of options at right-back recently - a situation made worse by Wataru Endo also picking up a serious injury recently.

That has left Arne Slot with Szoboszlai, Curtis Jones and Joe Gomez as his only realistic options in the position, with the Liverpool boss having already all but ruled Calvin Ramsay out of making the step up.

Despite Jones impressing in the FA Cup last weekend, it’s Szoboszlai who gets the nod against Forest, which Carragher feels is the right call. Not only that, but the Liverpool legend has suggested he should play there more often.

“Liverpool have had real problems there,” Carragher said on Sky Sports. “So, Endo was there against Sunderland, he’s got a really bad injury now, so three players who can play there have got problems - Gomez is on the bench, probably not yet fully fit.

“But if everybody was fully fit, he [Szoboszlai] is probably still Liverpool’s best right-back. That’s how good a player he is.”

Asked whether Szoboszlai was also Liverpool’s best midfield player, Carragher responded: “Yeah, he is this season. And that’s the problem for him really.

Looking ahead to the game against Forest, he added: “But I do think the midfield area, when you think of Nottingham Forest, you talk about the quality they’ve got in Elliot Anderson and Morgan Gibbs-White in that area, I think that’s going to be vital to how the game’s won today.”

Liverpool.com says: It’s a big call from Carragher to say Szoboszlai is Liverpool’s best right-back, and you’d have to say it’s hard to necessarily argue with him on that.

He has been an absolute revelation this season, whatever role he’s played in, but it’s also important that he gets to play in his best position. That would be in midfield, where he gets to set the tempo for Liverpool, so even if he is the best right-back, Slot shouldn’t be tempted into playing him there in the long-term.
