Opinion: Only one Chelsea defender has a shot at winning the club's Player of the Season award

With March approaching, Trevoh Chalobah and Chelsea are about to enter the crucial stage of the season.

Following their 1-1 draw with Burnley on Saturday, they have now played 27 games in the Premier League.

That leaves the Blues with just 11 matches left to play in the English top flight. At this point of the season, then, you can start to think about who the team’s best player has been.

Chalobah has definitely been up there, at least in terms of consistency.

Trevoh Chalobah has been Chelsea’s most consistent defender this season

It is quite unlikely that Chalobah will win the Chelsea Player of the Season award since he will be up against Joao Pedro and Enzo Fernandez, who have both been terrific this season.

However, if a defender were to win the accolade, the only defender it can be is Chalobah.

One user on TalkingPoints thinks the 26-year-old has actually been Chelsea’s only consistent centre-back this term.

Looking at Chelsea’s backline as a whole, though, Chalobah has probably been the only consistent defender full stop.

Quality-wise, Reece James and Marc Cucurella are better footballers than Chalobah. But the former has played a lot of games in midfield this season and has been in and out of the side with his fitness being managed.

As for Cucurella, he had a real dip in form around the winter time and was even sent off during Chelsea’s 2-1 loss to Fulham.

In the current campaign, it feels as though Chalobah has played every league game while making some important defensive contributions, often crucial blocks.

In total, Chalobah has started 26 out of Chelsea’s 27 top-flight fixtures. He missed one match because of suspension; had it not been for that the England international probably would have started all 27 games.

According to WhoScored, Chalobah is making six clearances per match, which is the highest average in Chelsea’s squad. He does not hesitate when it is time to clear his lines.

Chalobah has also managed to chip in with a few goals, so he really is having a strong individual season.

Who Chelsea fans think is Player of the Season so far

Again, as well as Chalobah, Pedro and Fernandez are also having solid campaigns.

When The Chelsea Chronicle asked supporters who the team’s Player of the Season has been, the two South Americans were the most common answers.

In fact, in the actual Player of the Season poll we ran, Fernandez won, while Pedro was a close second. There is still time to join the debate below!
