Former Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere had to be dragged away from angry fans after his Luton Town side were held to a 1-1 draw against Burton Albion.
Wilshere, 34, was appointed as Luton's new manager in October, replacing Matt Bloomfield, who was sacked following a slow start to the season. The Hatters sat 11th on 16 points from 11 matches in League One upon Wilshere's arrival, and although they have moved up ONE place since, he hasn't improved them as much as some supporters would have hoped.
Indeed, following a draw against relegation-threatened Burton at Kenilworth Road on Saturday, fans made their feelings crystal clear by chanting "you are embarrassing" in the direction of Wilshere and his players. Boos and jeers followed before Wilshere appeared to confront a supporter near the tunnel area.
But, before the situation escalated, Wilshere had to be dragged away by his own players down the tunnel and clear from the fans, who were furious as the Hatters missed the chance to close the gap on the top six.
The fan who filmed footage on social media said: "When you don’t even win against 19th place at home, that’s the frustrating thing. You can see Wilshere at the end, biting back. Need to sort it out. That's not good at all."
Nahki Wells did give Luton the lead in the 13th minute and they looked on course to claim a much-needed three points, up until Burton equalised in stoppage-time through Fabio Tavares.
It meant the Hatters' winless run stretched to three matches, following back-to-back away defeats at Cardiff City and Wigan Athletic. They now sit six points adrift the League One play-off places.
Speaking after his side's draw against Burton, Wilshere said post-match: "First of all, I understand their (the fans') frustrations, I do. I've said that a lot, but right now we need them.
"It's not for a lack of the players trying, they're giving everything every single day. We work really, really hard to try and win games, to try and make supporters happy.
"I think you can see that the players are really lacking belief, they're lacking confidence. It's difficult then when in the first minute there's booing, but right now, everyone needs to be together, everyone needs to stick together.
"We have no right just to turn up and win games and expect that we can just do that as we can't, you can clearly see that at the moment that is not the case."
Luton, who were a Premier League club as recent as 2023/24, are next in action when they face Plymouth Argyle in the EFL Trophy quarter-final on Tuesday. They then look to get their promotion push back on track with a trip to bottom club Port Vale next Saturday.
