Buffalo Bills should move quickly to re-sign FA FB Reggie Gilliam

With all that Reggie Gilliam does, and does well, bringing him back on a new contract seems like smart business for the Buffalo Bills.

I’ve been going through film on Buffalo Bills unrestricted free agents and there’s been a pretty clear refrain so far. “Keep if the price is right.” That’s not a weird outcome, for the record. Players with such high value that it’s an easy decision would have had contracts negotiated, and therefore not show up in a free-agent article.

For what I do, there’s not much value in reviewing players where the consensus is that there’s no harm in letting them go. So naturally this series lends itself to that middle ground. We take a quick detour for this edition though by “reviewing” fullback Reggie Gilliam.

I’m no contract guru, but you don’t need to be to know that Gilliam landing back in Buffalo won’t break the bank with a fair deal. His high value on special teams (over 76% of snaps) and the running game make this an easy decision. Let’s watch some film anyway.

I didn’t even wait for the conclusion section so my opinion will be no surprise. Reggie Gilliam has a ton of value in this offense in the fullback role, and I don’t see any reason to rock the boat for the position. Gilliam is a solid back for blocking, shoving Josh Allen by the backside, and his 100% catch rate this past season (and two others) ain’t bad. Sure it comes on low target numbers, but Gilliam poses enough real threat as a receiver where decoy snaps have real value. Bring him back!

1. His first of two targets last season was a better catch than it was a pass. Allen’s throw was a bit behind, which forced Gilliam to spin against his own momentum to make the catch, which limited the yards gained, but also highlights Gilliam’s hands and focus.

2. Gilliam’s second of two targets was a better throw than it was a catch, though it was still a good catch. Gilliam would appear to be blocking based on the start of the play, but he snuck out to run a route and has a great highlight courtesy of Mitch Trubisky.

3. The Shnowplow/Tush push needs no explanation.

4. A good block, followed by good effort to stick with the ball and help out if possible.

5. Running a deep route on a quick pass was likely a decoy, but you need to have Gilliam covered because he can definitely catch the ball — and a defender was drawn very far away from the play as a result.

6. All I can say is I don’t want to be on the receiving end of that.

7. Obligatory special teams clip. Gilliam knows what he’s doing and does it at a high level, making this an even easier decision.
