Leeds United return to Elland Road next week with a tasty clash at home to Manchester City under the floodlights.
United’s home form is surely going to be a difference-maker for the final 11 games of the Premier League season.
A six-point gap to the bottom three has been retained after a strong point away at Aston Villa. Up next is another top-end side, Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City.
Theo Walcott makes stunning Leeds United claim during Real Madrid question
This week, Amazon Prime Sport pundit Theo Walcott was asked how he thought Real Madrid would fare if they were plonked into the Premier League.
While you’d imagine the Galacticos, boasting Kylian Mbappe and Vinicius Junior among other stars, would be able to compete for the title, Walcott doesn’t agree.
“Good question,” the ex-Arsenal winger said, predicting Los Blancos would finish eighth. “I feel they may struggle at places like Crystal Palace away, Leeds away, and nights like St James’ Park. The weather plays its part as well.”
It goes to show the fear factor Daniel Farke has produced at Elland Road in recent months. He’s yet to lose a game for the club when played under the lights at home – only Liverpool have come away with anything in LS11 in a kick-off later than 3pm this season.
Manchester City warned over Leeds United’s force at Elland Road
I want to preface this part by stressing that I’m not expecting Leeds to get anything against a Man City side looking to hunt down Arsenal.
The title is technically in Man City’s hands – if they win every game from hereon, the title’s theirs. The same is true of Arsenal, as the two meet later in the season.
However, if Pep Guardiola was at all fretting over his trip to Elland Road, comments like these only cement that idea. ‘Elland Road under the lights’ is hitting ‘cold rainy nights in Stoke’ levels of virality amongst neutral fans and pundits.
The fact that Walcott thinks Real Madrid would struggle in the Premier League on the basis of Daniel Farke’s Leeds roughing them up is just a wild concept. It’s a sentence I never thought I’d be typing out.
There’s credence to that theory, though. Chelsea, Liverpool, and Crystal Palace all came here at nighttime and left in tatters. Even with Liverpool earning a draw, turmoil followed the full-time whistle.
Man City may well be a bridge too far, but Leeds could and should be hopeful of being capable of snatching something next Saturday.
