Liverpool headed into the game at the City Ground this afternoon desperate to secure all three points as it would massively boost their chances of securing Champions League qualification for next season.
It has been a season of many ups and downs for Arne Slot’s men but today felt like a crucial game in the context of the season.
Alexis Mac Allister provided Liverpool with the ultimate relief as he scored a 97th-minute winner to snatch the win after another game in which they failed to impress for large parts of the game.
The team appeared to be lacking creativity and the ability to link the midfield with the forward line and that would be down to the loss of Florian Wirtz during the warm-up of the game.
Liverpool’s summer signing has been in great form recently and has been a vital part behind the team’s mini resurgence since the turn of the year.
Without him on the pitch, there was a clear struggle for Liverpool to take any real control of the game in the centre of the park.
Following the game, Arne Slot commented on Florian Wirtz injury, as we await confirmation on the severity of it.
Speaking to Sky Sports, he said:
“We don’t think it’s very serious but he felt his back. He wasn’t able to be 100% or even close to 100%. We hope and expect he will be able to be with us again next week but you never know.”
“I hope it’s more than that because if we rely on one player, then things are not good. And that’s also not the situation. We’ve missed players throughout the whole season. It was another miss for us. He’s in really good form.”
Arne Slot will be hoping that one of the players that has been making his team tick in recent weeks isn’t headed for an extended spell on the sidelines as we approach a crucial part of the season.
