What Trevoh Chalobah has said about Chelsea's attackers as defender makes point about team's xG

Chelsea defender Trevoh Chalobah has called out his teammates after Saturday’s draw with Burnley.

Chelsea were 1-0 up for practically the whole game and were minutes away from earning all three points.

However, Zian Flemming popped up late in stoppage time to equalise for Burnley and ensure that the points were shared.

When will Trev get his flowers? 💐

Chelsea went a man down after Wesley Fofana was dismissed, but Chalobah is refusing to put the sole blame on the Frenchman.

Trevoh Chalobah tells teammates they’re not capitalising on high xG

Chalobah was disappointed with Chelsea’s finishing not just against Burnley, but also in their 2-2 draw with Leeds United.

The central defender thinks his side need to be more clinical, especially with how high their xG in the Premier League is this season.

Speaking in a post-match interview via Chelsea’s official club website after the Burnley draw, Chalobah said: “It’s what we’ve struggled with in the last two games. We have had so many chances. It’s what we need to work on going forward — how to kill teams off. We have got one of the highest xGs in the league and we’re not capitalising on that.

“Red cards change games and it made it difficult for us. Conceding at the end was a killer because I thought we defended well until that point.”

How are we calling Arsenal bottlers? 🤦‍♂️

What does Liam Rosenior need to do to change this?

It has been an up and down season for Fofana, who is just the latest Chelsea player to see red this term.

Chalobah, on the other hand, has had a much more consistent and steady campaign. In fact, Chalobah has arguably been Chelsea’s most consistent defender.

What is Chelsea’s xG in the Premier League this season?

Chalobah is right to point out Chelsea’s xG, as it is very high and the team are underperforming in relation to it. In fact, Liam Rosenior’s squad actually have the highest xG in the Premier League.

According to Understat, Chelsea have an xG of 56.81, higher than Arsenal’s, Manchester City’s and everyone else’s in the division.

However, they have only scored 48 times this term, giving them an xG difference of -8.81. Really, then, Chelsea should have scored around eight or nine more goals this term. Imagine where the Blues would be if they had done so.

Going forward, as Chalobah has made abundantly clear, they need to be more clinical. If not, Chelsea should prepare for the Europa League anthem next season instead of the Champions League one.
