NFL Issues 'Warning' After 8 Former Players Have Died

The NFL Players Association has sent a warning reminder to all players following eight tragic deaths this year.

Eight former NFL players have died so far in 2026. Many of them are far too young to be passing away. The latest, 25-year-old wide receiver Rondale Moore, was found dead at home, suffering from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

"Rondale Moore was a complete joy to coach," his college coach, Jeff Brohm, said. "The ultimate competitor that wouldn't back down from any challenge. Rondale had a work ethic unmatched by anyone. A great teammate that would come through in any situation. We all love Rondale, we loved his smile and competitive edge that always wanted to please everyone he came in contact with.

"We offer all of our thoughts and prayers to Rondale and his family, we love him very much."

Seven other former NFL players, including 54-year-old former Pro Bowler Tre' Johnson, and 30-year-old former NFL player Josh Cardiello, have died from sudden medical emergencies.

Meanwhile, former NFL veteran Kevin Johnson was found dead in a homeless encampment, while former NFL running backs Scott Laidlaw - who played for the Cowboys - and Randy McMillan - who played for the Colts - died at 72 and 67, respectively.

Former Super Bowl champion Barry Wilburn was killed in a house fire at 62. Michael Proctor, a former Patriots quarterback, was killed at 58.

In the wake of these tragic deaths, the NFLPA has sent out a warning to all current and former players.

They are here to help.

"The NFL Players Association is devastated by the sudden and tragic passing of Rondale Moore," the union said. "This immense loss is felt deeply across our union, and we value his service as a player rep. Our condolences and prayers are with Rondale's family, teammates, and loved one during this incredibly difficult time.

"In moments like this we are reminded of how much our players carry, on and off the field. To our members: Please know that support is always within reach. Check on your teammates and prioritize your mental health. If you or someone you know is struggling, we encourage you to take advantage of the many confidential resources available to you through the NFLPA."

Our thoughts continue to be with the friends and family members of everyone impacted.
