Berta means business: Arsenal now in regular contact to sign £100m star, they're pushing hard

Arsenal are now in regular contact to sign an "incredible" £100m star, and they are pushing hard to get a deal over the line.

Gunners pushing hard to sign new forward

Viktor Gyokeres has stepped up in recent weeks, earning the Player of the Month award in January, before going on to score a brace in the 2-0 victory against Sunderland and the 4-1 North London derby victory on Sunday.

However, the Sweden international is arguably yet to reach the heights expected of him, with many of his goals coming against newly-promoted sides.

It was always going to be a risk to sign Gyokeres, given that he was unproven in a major European league, so it is no surprise the north Londoners have set out to sign a striker with plenty of Premier League experience.

Last week, it was revealed Mikel Arteta's side have already held talks about a deal for Atletico Madrid star Julian Alvarez, and there has now been a new update on their pursuit of the centre-forward.

According to a report from TEAMtalk, Arsenal are now in regular contact over the signing of Alvarez, as they are receiving 'weekly updates' about his situation at Atletico Madrid.

The Argentinian is becoming increasingly unhappy at the Spanish club, and the Gunners are at the front of the queue to secure his signature, alongside Chelsea, while there could also be competition from La Liga heavyweights FC Barcelona.

A deal could be on the expensive side, however, with Atletico looking to hold out for at least £100m, and the prospect of sending Gabriel Jesus and Gabriel Martinelli in the opposite direction has been explored.

"Incredible" Alvarez could be Gyokeres upgrade

The former Manchester City man has impressed ever since arriving at Atletico, receiving high praise from reporter Roy Nemer earlier this season, who lauded his all-round game.

Indeed, the Argentina international is a well-rounded striker, as shown by the fact he has regularly contributed both goals and assists throughout his career to date.

Julian Alvarez's attacking record Appearances Goals Assists

River Plate 122 54 31

Manchester City 103 36 19

Atletico Madrid 93 42 14

Gyokeres, on the other hand, has picked up just two assists in 36 matches for Arsenal, and the 27-year-old has struggled in the bigger matches this season, failing to score against any side currently above ninth.

As such, Alvarez, who has already proven himself in the Premier League, could be an upgrade on Gyokeres, and it is promising news that Arsenal appear to be very keen on a deal.
