Man City boss Pep Guardiola spoke on Rodri’s future at the club after City’s 2-1 win over Newcastle.
However, looking to the future, the top City players will be keen to find out whether Guardiola is going to stay at the club, and they may make decisions about their own futures based on what Guardiola does.
Real Madrid and Barcelona want Rodri
There are questions over Rodri’s future at Manchester City, as the Spaniard’s contract at the Etihad is due to expire at the end of next season. It means that City will need to consider selling him in the summer, if they want some form of financial return for the 29-year-old.
According to German outlet Bild, Real Madrid and Barcelona are both keeping tabs on Rodri’s situation, and they want to sign the Man City star in the summer. He has an estimated market value of around £66m, but the Cityzens could ask for more, considering that he won the Ballon d’Or in 2024.
Pep Guardiola was asked about Rodri’s future before the Newcastle game, and he was asked if Rodri’s future lies at the Etihad. He responded: “I would very much like that. Rodri is Rodri. The older he gets, the wiser he becomes, and the better he understands the game.
“There are players who distinguish themselves on the big stages and in difficult situations. Rodri is one of them. Like Bernie (Bernardo Silva), like Ruben (Dias) and like many others I've had in the past. Without great personalities, you can't achieve what we've achieved."
Man City could replace Rodri with Anderson
It is no surprise that several reports link Manchester City to signing a holding midfielder, as they will need to replace Rodri if he leaves either this summer or in 2027, when his contract expires.
Anderson is also linked with Man United, but it is understood that City are ahead, and they could make a move for the 22-year-old in the summer. Forest are likely to demand at least £80m for Anderson, unless they suffer relegation, which could significantly drop their asking price.
