When you watch Miloš Kerkez surge down the left flank today, it is easy to forget how improbable his journey once seemed. The Hungarian international’s path to the top of English football was not paved with early headlines or viral clips, but with restless ambition, bold moves across borders, and a refusal to be intimidated by reputation.
Humble Beginnings and a Bold Leap
Born in Vrbas, Serbia, Kerkez chose to represent Hungary internationally, but his football education was shaped by movement. As a teenager, he left familiar surroundings to chase development opportunities abroad. That willingness to move, to be uncomfortable, became a defining trait.
His big break came when he joined the academy of AC Milan. Kerkez spent a formative period of his development at the academy after joining the Italian giants in 2021 from ETO FC Gyor. Though he never established himself in the first team, his time with Primavera (U19) side proved crucial in sharpening his tactical understanding and professionalism.
It was an education in elite standards, and Kerkez soaked it in. His spell at Milan laid an important foundation for his breakthrough in senior football abroad.
A transfer to AZ Alkmaar in early 2022 proved transformative. In the Netherlands, he found rhythm and responsibility. Dutch football’s emphasis on technical quality and positional intelligence suited him perfectly.
During the 2022-23 season, Kerkez became a regular starter, contributing goals and assists while helping AZ compete strongly in domestic competition and reach the latter stages of European football in the UEFA Europa Conference League.
Kerkez blossomed into an attack-minded left-back, aggressive in duels, fearless going forward, and relentless in recovery runs.
His dynamic overlapping runs, crossing ability, and outstanding work rate made him a standout performer, attracting interest from clubs across Europe.
This marked his time in Alkmaar as a major breakthrough in his professional career.
Announcing Himself at AFC Bournemouth
When Bournemouth brought him to the Premier League, some wondered whether he was ready for English football’s intensity. That doubt did not last long. At Bournemouth, Kerkez showed why modern full-backs are among the most valuable players in the game.
He offered explosive acceleration down the wing, a willingness to overlap repeatedly,sharp delivery into the box,and competitive edge in one-on-one defending.
He wasn’t perfect, young defenders rarely are, but his bravery stood out. He never hid after mistakes. Instead, he demanded the ball again. Crucially, he proved he could handle Premier League tempo.
