Former Minnesota Vikings DB Ronyell Whitaker dies at 46

(KTTC) – More sad news for Minnesota Vikings fans as another player died over the weekend.

Former Vikings defensive back Ronyell Whitaker has died, according to a family statement on the Minnesota Viking’s website.

According to the Vikings and the family’s statement, Whitaker grew up in Norfolk, Virginia and played at Virginia Tech.

Whitaker joined Tampa Bay as an undrafted free agent in 2003. He spent some time on the Buccaneer’s practice squad and active roster as a rookie.

In his first season in the NFL, he appeared in four regular season games.

Whitaker joined the purple and gold in 2006 where he appeared in 27 games over his two seasons. He recorded 31 tackles.

Whitaker finished his career with the Canadian Football League after spending a portion of the 2008 offseason with the Lions.

The news about Whitaker comes as 25-year-old wide receiver Rondale Moore died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
