Stop me if you’ve heard this before, but the NCAA is looking to tweak the targeting rule. This time, it sounds like they are considering getting rid of the carry over punishment if someone is ejected for targeting in the second half of a game. Two factors have led to this: 1) a Miami player missed the first half of the National Championship due to a penalty in the semi-final game and 2) targeting is down and since players are adapting, punishments can become less strict. However, a repeat offender could face stricter punishments over the course of the season.
In the biggest Mountain West game of the weekend, the Wolf Pack found a way to beat the Aggies, securing a three-point win Saturday night. It was a back and forth affair all game, but the Nevada defense stepped up in the closing minutes. Another factor was late-game free throw shooting, where the Wolf Pack did better than the Aggies. This game could end up putting Utah State a bit close to the bubble than they would like.
In another game with a surprising outcome, Colorado State came away with a victory over San Diego State. Carey Booth had a career-high 22 points and Jase Butler topped that with a career-high 23 points, as the team got contributions from several players, leading to a true team attack. It was their fifth win in a row, as the Rams might be getting hot at the right time, with the Mountain West tournament looming.
