Patriots Insider Makes Surprise Pick For Most Underwhelming Rookie Of 2025 Season

New England Patriots running back TreVeyon Henderson led the team in rushing attempts (180), rushing yards (911), rushing touchdowns (nine), touches (215) and yards from scrimmage (1,132), among other categories, during the 2025 regular season.

Henderson also tied for third in the NFL at 5.1 yards per carry and was an Offensive Rookie of the Year finalist.

Still, Patriots insider Chad Graff of The Athletic chose the second-round pick as his New England first-year player who "underwhelmed" the most this past season.

"Yes, he was a legit candidate for Offensive Rookie of the Year, but hear me out: Henderson was too boom-or-bust to be trusted by coaches late in the season. Most of his midseason success was boosted by a few explosive carries," he said, answering a reader's question about the rookie class in his mailbag. "While Henderson’s big-play ability was certainly there, he needs to get better at picking up what’s in front of him. Before the season, I thought Henderson would become the no-doubt No. 1 running back for the Patriots. Maybe those expectations were too high. But he didn’t reach that level of play in a league where running backs often do. And it’s still not a given that he’ll get more than half the carries next season."

Graff's points are valid.

There were many fans and NFL analysts who believed that Henderson would run away with the starting job as a rookie, but to his credit, Rhamondre Stevenson held strong and got better as the year progressed.

Henderson looked like one of the most explosive players in the game at times, but notably, only went over 82 rushing yards in a game twice, despite having at least 10 carries in 10 contests.

The Ohio State product certainly showed signs of greatness in his first season but has room to grow. too.
