€72m Liverpool signing might need surgery after Reds branded 'suckers' for signing him

Liverpool’s new signing, Jeremy Jacquet, is not guaranteed to return to action this season after suffering a serious shoulder injury.

At the start of February, the French defender was announced as Liverpool’s first signing of 2026. The Reds reached a £60m agreement with Rennes for his transfer, and although he will move to Anfield in July, there is no guarantee that fans will see him play again this season.

There has been little to no information on the type of injury he sustained, except that it was to his shoulder, but now information is emerging in France.

According to French journalist Francois Rauzy, the 20-year-old’s return “before the end of the season is not guaranteed.”

Rauzy adds that “discussions [are] ongoing with Liverpool on the health status of Jacquet and the next steps to follow regarding the central defender.”

Meanwhile, major outlet L’Equipe is reporting that Jacquet might have to undergo surgery to repair the damage to his shoulder, but there is no confirmation from Rennes on whether or not this is true.

It’s certainly a concern for Liverpool, having committed to a massive €72m (£60m) transfer fee. If surgery is required, it will not only confirm that his season is over but also that it could impact his availability for pre-season and the start of the 2026-27 season, depending on the severity of the injury.

It’s unlikely he will miss pre-season or the start of next season, but it’s understandable that Liverpool are concerned. Jacquet picked up the injury just days after his move to Merseyside was announced.

The injury gives some credence to claims that Liverpool are ‘suckers’ for paying such a large fee for a 20-year-old.

Speaking to RMC Sport,1998 World Cup winner with France, Christophe Dugarry, branded Liverpool ‘suckers’ for agreeing to pay Rennes’ asking price.

He said: “This isn’t meant to offend the player; honestly, he’s not to blame at all, and we wish him all the best because he’s a good player.

“When you have suckers like that… Well done to Rennes. Rennes managed to find a sucker like Liverpool for 72 million euros.”

However, no U21 player in Europe has won more aerial duels than Jacquet, with soon-to-be Liverpool teammate Giovanni Leoni in second place.
