THE GOOD

– Rare and elite size dimensions that give him leverage advantages if he applies first contact

– Very long arms that drive blockers backwards and raise their pad level

– Frame and reach suited for extension control

– Consistently walked back guards and centers into the pocket this season

– Moves laterally incredibly well with nimble footwork for a guy his size

– Works through stunts and traffic with quick feet

– Vision to locate ball carriers while engaged by blockers

– Power to compress gap surfaces

– Generates early-play pressure with hand-usage burst

– Gets his hands up quickly on pass rush downs to try and knock down passes

– Demonstrated a much better pass-rush repertoire this year with club-swim, rip, swim, and speed-to-power conversion

– Quick pressures made with violent hand strikes

– Can hold point of attack with techniques like knee-drop against duo blocks

– Productive tackler and had a significant amount of run stops where he got into the backfield or went sideline-to-sideline quickly

– Played both as a nose tackle and in different tackle alignments

– Has elite special teams reps on the blocking units (6 total blocked FG kicks and PAT’s)

THE BAD

– Tall build leads to high pad level

– Creates a large strike zone with wide hands that make for leverage disadvantages

– Double teams often overwhelm him

– Limited bend reduces his ability to sink his hips

– Lacks short-area twitch and closing ability against more mobile QB’s

– Size hinders finishing plays after initial wins

– Offensive linemen can recover once he loses first-step advantage

– Doesn’t redirect sharply in space

– Average burst limits immediate backfield penetration

– Lack of staying balanced leads to missed tackles and ending up on the ground too often

– Not sudden enough to live as an attack 3-technique

– Off-field and character concern history

TAPE BREAKDOWN

Zxavian Harris enjoyed a breakout 2025 season at Ole Miss. He showed his potential as a traits-based defensive lineman who has unique size and length proportions combined with functional movement to flash a lot of talent. He’s a plus run defender with a developing pass-rush toolbox that he doesn’t consistently win with yet. His ceiling comes from a disruptive frame when leveraged properly. His floor stems from high pad level and twitch limitations that could impact his pass-rushing potential. This guy has turned himself into a disruptive run defender who wins with length, block control, and quickness. He has improved his power distribution throughout his body, but he won’t impress anyone with immense strength because of his long limbs.

He can assert his dominance in so many ways, from crossing the center’s face to a wicked swim move, as he does here against Arkansas. Harris is #51 for Ole Miss in all of the following clips.

Although Harris can encounter double teams, his pad level tends to rise because of guys getting underneath his shoulders. But more times than not, he came back and pursued guys once he got free. He has to learn how to get unstuck more often and anchor better when asked to.

The lateral agility and fast feet from his basketball background show up all over his tape when teams try to run outside zone and stretch plays against Ole Miss. Harris can get down the line quickly, and angle blocks usually don’t work well against him.

When it comes to his pass-rush abilities, his biggest strengths are how advantageously he can be deployed and maneuver at the line of scrimmage. Watch him initially move to the A gap. Once the play begins, he loops to the 5-tech, catching the offensive tackle off-guard. This allows him to generate leverage and pressure the quarterback.

When he doesn’t get to the quarterback, he generates pressure a significant amount of the time. He excels at getting his hands up to disrupt the quarterback’s vision and passing lanes.

CONCLUSION

Finding an NFL projection for Harris is complicated. As a player, he shows a lot of upside and potential to be a strong rotational defensive lineman. He has developmental starter upside because of his rare traits, athleticism, and ability to play multiple positions.

I think his best role at the next level would be in a two-gap hybrid odd front, because he can play as a 4i/5-tech and also give you some snaps as 0-tech/1i with his strengths. This role would fit in very well with how the Pittsburgh Steelers scheme has been. He could come in as a depth piece on the defensive line and be a potential big-time contributor on special teams with his blocking skills.

The other part of the conversation is his off-the-field concerns. I’m sure he’ll have many character and personality questions to answer throughout the pre-draft process. I think it would do Harris a world of good if he could go to a team with a strong defensive line group with high-character, experienced guys. Pittsburgh’s locker room could fit the bill.

He looks and plays a lot like Deone Walker of the Buffalo Bills when he came out of Kentucky last year. There weren’t the same type of character concerns, but both have “planet theory” bodies that you just don’t come across often with their traits. They also have the same concerns: high pad levels and not playing technically consistently.
