The controversy ignited during a podcast appearance on Josh Pate’s College Football Show, when Donald Trump torched the NFL’s revised kickoff format. The comments were reported to have been echoed across social platforms the same morning. “I hate to see this new kickoff rule they have. It takes the glamour, the glory it takes everything out of the game. When I watch a kickoff, that’s a big event. That’s the opening of a game, and that’s important. It’s an important thing. And then they do this. I’m not even sure anybody understands what they’re even doing. They kick it short of the end zone now. Somebody said they want to see more runbacks. Actually, they want to see much fewer runbacks. I think it’s very bad for the NFL, and I hope college football doesn’t do that.”
