K'Lavon Chaisson was a great player for the New England Patriots last season, but he is a free agent and may need to be replaced.
Chaisson had 7.5 regular-season sacks and three sacks in the playoffs. He has set himself up for a payday. The Patriots had 35 sacks as a team last season, and could use an elite pass rusher. However, if they cannot acquire one, another season with a deep group capable of getting pressure may be the route they are forced to go.
If they cannot pay Chaisson, they could target other free agent pass rushers on the open market. Khalil Mack is slated to be a free agent, and could be a solid additionf or the Patriots. He had 5.5 sacks last season in just 12 games. Mack is a nine-time Pro Bowler, three-time First Team All-Pro and former Defensive Player of the Year. He is no longer in his prime and has not announced whether he will return next season.
Mack contemplated retirement last offseason before signing a one-year, $18 million deal with the Chargers. If he is willing to sign a cheaper one-year deal again, the Patriots could replace Chaisson with him.
Mack should not be the Patriots' first target in free agency when it comes to pass rushers. However, if they cannot find a young star who can take over for years to come, and they lose Chaisson, Mack would be a solid piece. He is a veteran looking for a chance to win a ring, and the Patriots are fresh off a Super Bowl run.
It's unclear if Mack would take a discount to play on a real Super Bowl contender, but if he does, he would be a great fit for the Patriots. He was a Pro Bowler as recently as 2024 and had a 17-sack season in 2023. is bound for Canton when he retires. He has 113 career sacks, 662 tackles, 148 tackles for a loss, 36 forced fumbles, 43 passes defended and is one of the best defensive players of this generation.
The Patriots would love a version of him that's close to his prime self. However, if he can give them production even slightly better than Chaisson's, he would be a fine option. However, the Patriots would be wise to check the rest of the market before making Mack a priority.
