Liverpool suffered another injury blow ahead of their 1-0 win over Nottingham Forest last weekend. Alexis Mac Allister’s late winner secured all three points at the City Ground, moving the Reds back into Champions League contention and level on points with Chelsea and Manchester United.

However, the victory came amid concerns, as Liverpool’s performance was below par, and they lost a key player in the warm-up. Florian Wirtz was originally named in Liverpool’s starting XI at the City Ground but was replaced by Curtis Jones before kick-off after reporting a back issue during the warm-up.

Conor Bradley and Giovanni Leoni are both ruled out for the remainder of the season. Bradley sustained a season-ending knee injury during Liverpool’s goalless draw at Arsenal last month, while Leoni ruptured his ACL against Southampton in the League Cup at the start of the campaign.

Liverpool goalkeeper Vitezslav Jaros, currently on loan at Ajax, will also miss the rest of the season due to a knee injury suffered in training. The Czech keeper, who has been a regular starter with 26 appearances across all competitions, is set to undergo surgery, halting his promising progress this term.

“[Jaros] sustained a serious knee injury during training today,” said Ajax. “Medical examinations at the hospital have shown that surgery is required, meaning he will not feature again this season.”

Jaros had been a regular for Ajax, starting 19 Eredivisie games and all six Champions League matches. He regained his spot under new coach Fred Grim following the departure of John Heitinga, who had dropped him, but his season is now over due to a knee injury.

Speaking before a 1-1 draw against NEC, Grim said: “This has an impact, let’s put it that way. Never fun, but we just have to keep going. That’s the reality. He was in a lot of pain.

“You still hope it’s not too bad, but it didn’t look good. I’ve spoken to several players. Again, it’s very frustrating. But we have to keep going. Everyone knows that.”

Jaros joined Liverpool from Slavia Prague in 2017 and had loan spells at St Patrick’s Athletic, Notts County, Stockport County, and Sturm Graz, where he won the Austrian league and cup double.

Last season, he stayed at Liverpool as third-choice goalkeeper behind Alisson Becker and Caoimhin Kelleher, making a brief appearance in a 1-0 win at Crystal Palace and later starting in a 3-2 Carabao Cup victory at Brighton.
