Sean McVay and the Los Angeles Rams will have a new look in 2026, and that is true regarding the roster and the head coach’s staff. The Rams announced multiple changes to the group, and not just additions or new titles.
This follows a season in which McVay acted aggressively to address what ailed the Rams on special teams, leading to multiple changes in that phase, including a new coordinator.
While the Rams did add some heavy-hitting names, they also parted with one.

Robert Woods, Los Angeles Rams

The Rams posted on X on February 23 that they were “Announcing our 2026 Coaching Staff! [clipboard emoji],” which will be McVay’s 10th at the helm.
Among the set were previously announced moves for Nate Scheelhaase, who was named offensive coordinator this offseason in a promotion from passing game coordinator that the Rams called “well-deserved.”
However, the Rams also added Super Bowl champion wide receiver Robert Woods.
Woods, who won a ring with the Rams in 2021, retired as a member of the franchise last week, signing a one-day, ceremonial contract. He will serve as their assistant wide receivers coach.
The Buffalo Bills drafted Woods in the second round of the 2013 draft. He spent four seasons with Buffalo, five in LA, and had a two-year stint with the Houston Texans after one season with the Tennessee Titans. Woods did not play during the 2025 regular season.
He spent the campaign as a member of the Pittsburgh Steelers practice squad.
That Woods, a Gardena native and USC alum, decided to retire with the Rams spoke volumes and now serves as a fitting precursor to this move.
Woods is not the only former Rams Super Bowl champion joining the club. Former Rams center Brian Allen was announced as an assistant coach for the offensive line. Allen started 32 of 50 games with the Rams, spending the bulk of his five-season playing career with LA.
Allen spent the 2024 season with the Cleveland Browns.
However, he landed on injured reserve during the offseason, got released before the preseason, and retired in March 2025.
Former Commanders Coach Joins Kliff Kingsbury in LA

Another one of the Rams’ previously reported moves, adding former Washington Commanders OC and Arizona Cardinals head coach Kliff Kingsbury, received some much-needed clarity and additional context.
Kingsbury will serve as the Rams’ assistant head coach.
Moreover, he is not coming alone. Former Commanders assistant HC and pass game coordinator Brian Johnson is joining him.
“There was chatter he’d leave after not getting the OC job in Washington,” NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo posted on X on February 23 regarding Kingsbury’s former role that went to David Blough. “Now on to LA for him.”
Johnson also spent three seasons with the Philadelphia Eagles, serving as their OC in 2023.
He and Kingsbury now both land in fitting spots, under McVay, who has touted his own development as an offensive play-caller and coach.
Rams Cut Ties With Highly Regarded Assistant
Aubrey Pleasant

One of the more interesting moves from McVay’s coaching staff shakeup was that former secondary coach Aubrey Pleasant was no longer listed. Coaching veteran Jimmy Lake, formerly a senior defensive assistant, has replaced him.
Lake spent the 2024 season as the Atlanta Falcons’ defensive coordinator, but he was also an assistant under McVay with the Rams in 2023.
The Rams ranked 19th against the pass last season.
Some of that was due to injuries. However, the Rams boast one of the league’s most impactful pass rushes and got surprisingly strong play from their linebackers. So, it stands to reason that McVay would explore every avenue to address one of the Rams’ deficiencies.
