What Gunner Rivers' commitment means for NC State football in 2027 class

RALEIGH, N.C. -- NC State football not only landed the commitment of a legacy quarterback in Fairhope (Ala.) St. Michael Gunner Rivers, but got a Top-10 signal-caller in the 2027 class in the process. The four-star son of Wolfpack Hall of Famer Philip Rivers joining the program gives the Pack some pop on the recruiting trail, but also solidifies what could be the future of the program under center for the foreseeable future.

Rivers is not only the son of Philip Rivers, he's also emerged as one of the most elite quarterbacks in the country, regardless of class. While some sites currently have him rated as a three-star player and not even inside the Top 25 quarterbacks in the country -- we won't go into details on who that might be -- he's the 42nd-ranked prospect in the country, sixth-ranked quarterback in the nation and top player in Alabama, according to 247Sports.

No site has Rivers ranked higher than 247Sports.

As a junior, Rivers completed 237-0f-343 passes for 3,176 yards with 46 touchdowns and just five interceptions. That pushed him over 10,000 total passing yards -- 10,200, to be exact -- in his first three years while also accounting for 111 passing touchdowns, to just 15 total interceptions while completing 64.9 percent of his passes.

So what does it all mean for the immediate and distant future of the Wolfpack? Let's dive straight into that.
