Kansas City native Nate Scheelhaase has been in NFL circles as a rising star in the coaching world. And he’s earned the biggest job promotion in his decade-long coaching career.

After interviewing with several teams for a head coaching job, Scheelhaase stayed with the Los Angeles Rams and was promoted from pass game coordinator to offensive coordinator, the team announced Monday. Quarterbacks coach Dave Ragone is listed as his associate coordinator.

The position is a famous one under head coach Sean McVay, producing several head coaches like Green Bay’s Matt LaFleur, Minnesota’s Kevin O’Connell, Cincinnati’s Zac Taylor, and Jacksonville’s Liam Coen. The Rams’ previous OC, Mike LaFleur, recently became head coach of the Arizona Cardinals.

Scheelhaase helped the Rams have the top scoring and passing offense in the NFL, which saw quarterback Matthew Stafford win his first MVP at 37 and star receivers Davante Adams and Puka Nacua have impressive, productive seasons. The Rams rode their dynamic offense to the NFC Championship Game, where they lost to the eventual Super Bowl champion Seattle Seahawks.

The Rockhurst alum was a star quarterback in KC and at Illinois, where he set an Illini record for total offense during his career (2009-13). Scheelhaase shifted to coaching at Illinois in 2015 and rose up the ranks at Iowa State under head coach Matt Campbell for six seasons before McVay plucked him from the college ranks in 2024.

Scheelhaase has only one season of OC experience, in 2023 with the Cyclones, and has fast-tracked to his first NFL OC spot in his third season with the Rams.
