Arsenal striker Viktor Gyokeres is closing in on triggering another payment to Sporting CP after his latest display in the North London derby.

According to Portuguese newspaper O Jogo, the Swedish international is close to activating a €500,000 (£430,000) bonus clause tied to goal contributions. Gyokeres scored twice in Arsenal’s 4-1 win over Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday, further underlining his growing importance.

He now has 18 goal contributions this season – 15 goals and three assists. The agreement between Arsenal and Sporting states that once he reaches 20 goal involvements, Sporting will receive an additional €500,000 (£430,000). Another €500,000 (£430,000) is scheduled for every subsequent block of 20 contributions.

Performance-based structure explained

Gyokeres joined Arsenal in summer 2025 for €63.5m (£54.6m) fixed, with up to €10m (£8.6m) in add-ons. A Bola references slightly different figures – €65.7m (£56.5m) plus €10.2m (£8.8m) in bonuses – reflecting reporting variations in Portugal. Either way, the deal was heavily incentive-driven.

Sporting have already benefited from one of those clauses. When Gyokeres completed 20 matches with at least 45 minutes on the pitch, the Lisbon club received €1.25m (£1.1m).

There is no sell-on clause included in the agreement, which means Sporting’s additional gains depend entirely on these performance targets.

From early Arsenal scrutiny to undisputed starter

Gyokeres did not enjoy a smooth start in England. Early in the campaign, the British and European press questioned whether he could justify the size of the transfer fee. His adaptation period was closely scrutinised, as expectations were immediate.

However, after a slow start, he seems to have finally established himself as an undisputed starter under Mikel Arteta.

Across all competitions, Gyokeres has made 36 appearances, scoring 15 goals and providing two assists, while logging 2,344 minutes. In the Premier League alone, he has featured 26 times and scored 10 goals. He has also contributed in the UEFA Champions League and domestic cups, reinforcing his role as Arsenal’s central attacking reference.

His brace against Tottenham carried symbolic weight. It came in a high-intensity derby and demonstrated sharper movement, improved link-up play and clinical finishing.

For Arsenal, the structured bonus model appears increasingly aligned with output. Payments are triggered by tangible production, not abstract milestones. Meanwhile, Sporting continue to capitalise on Gyokeres’ impact from afar.

With only two more goal contributions required, the next €500,000 (£430,000) now feels imminent rather than hypothetical.
