Cleveland Browns Film Room: Charlie Kolar is an Underrated Free Agency Target

Even before the news that David Njoku would be moving on, the Cleveland Browns were going to need another tight end this offseason. One player the team could target is Charlie Kolar of the Baltimore Ravens, a player who was very low on the totem pole as far as targets went, but was still utilized often for his blocking ability. Does the film show a player who would play a defined role in Cleveland, or could he be something more with increased opportunities?

Kolar was a fourth-round pick out of Iowa State back in 2022, and is actually one of the most athletic tight ends in the game. He has ideal size and excellent athleticism to go along with it.

That's surprising because of what his role with the Ravens is. Despite playing in all 17 games, he had a career-high 15 targets, placing him eighth on the team. As the third-string TE, he was rarely involved in the passing game - he ran just 102 routes all season, which comes out to only six per game. When evaluating his ability in that regard, there just isn't a large sample size to gauge him on. He seems to be able to generate enough separation, and has three drops on 41 career targets. In this aspect of the game, there's a lot of projection between what he's been and what he could potentially be. The athletic data clearly indicates physical ability, but he's not gotten the opportunity to display that.
