Manchester City appear increasingly resigned to losing Bernardo Silva at the end of the season, with Spanish reports now claiming the midfielder is ready for a new chapter.
According to Sport in Spain, the 31-year-old is “leaning towards” a move away after nine seasons at the Etihad. His contract expires on 30 June, and the report suggests Pep Guardiola’s side will not push aggressively for a renewal.
Bernardo has long been linked with FC Barcelona. His agent, Jorge Mendes, maintains strong ties with the Catalan club. In addition, the player is said to be fond of the region and has previously spent holidays on the Costa Brava.
However, the report argues that Barcelona’s midfield depth could complicate any move. With players such as Fermín López, Dani Olmo and Gavi already in place, Bernardo would need to adapt to a deeper role.
Questions are raised about physical intensity and whether the current squad profile suits him. As a result, an alternative in Spain is now being presented as more realistic.
Why Atlético Madrid are leading the race
Atlético Madrid are described as the strongest current candidate for the Manchester City player. Sporting director Mateu Alemany reportedly sees value in signing a player of Bernardo’s calibre on a free transfer.
The idea of remaining at elite continental level while playing a central role appeals to the Portuguese international. Diego Simeone would gain experience and technical quality, while Atlético continue reshaping their squad.
Meanwhile, speculation has not been limited to Spain. This week only, Bernardo has also been linked to Juventus and Galatasaray. However, the Spanish outlet downplays serious momentum behind those possibilities.
Paris Saint-Germain are also mentioned, largely due to DoF Luis Campos’ historic connection with Bernardo from Monaco. Yet the French club are currently prioritising younger profiles.
What happens next
From a Manchester City perspective, the situation appears calm rather than dramatic. Guardiola has publicly praised Bernardo again this week, calling him “one of the greats”, but there is a growing sense inside Spain that his cycle in England is reaching its natural end.
Manchester City are not applying visible pressure. Bernardo has options. Atlético Madrid currently look best placed in Spain. Other European clubs are circling.
With several months still remaining in the season, the player holds control. The expectation now is that clarity will arrive closer to the summer window, once City’s campaign objectives are resolved.
