The debate around Rio Ngumoha’s role at Liverpool has been simmering for weeks and exploded again after his electric late cameo against Nottingham Forest.
The 17‑year‑old came off the bench and immediately injected pace, direct running and belief into a tiring side, helping to turn a tight game in Liverpool’s favour and sparking calls for him to start ahead of more established names.
Among sections of the fanbase, there is now a genuine argument that Ngumoha should be starting ahead of Cody Gakpo or even Mohamed Salah in fixtures, particularly when Liverpool look flat in attack.
Pundits such as Jamie Carragher and Rio Ferdinand have highlighted how his fearlessness and one‑v‑one ability offer something different, with some going as far as to suggest that Arne Slot is being too cautious with a player who looks ready for more responsibility.
However, the former Chelsea winger has only managed 375 minutes of senior football this term spread out across 16 appearances, with the lion’s share coming in Carabao and FA Cup action.
That cautious approach has fuelled the wider discussion: is Slot right to drip‑feed opportunities to protect a prodigious talent from physical issues, or is he holding back a player whose cameos suggest he is already competing with Liverpool’s biggest stars for a place in the XI?
Luckily, it seems the player himself is not too worried, revealing when speaking to media after Nottingham Forest including the Liverpool Echo that Slot is important for him and that he is happy to continue to try and earn more minutes:
“I just need to keep pushing and keep gaining the manager’s trust and hopefully that leads to more minutes,” said Ngumoha. “Hopefully [more minutes] soon.”
“I think it has gone really well, you know,” Ngumoha added on his time at Liverpool as a whole. “I am learning a lot every day and playing with and training with some of the best players in the world.”
“I can’t ask for much more as a young kid. So I just think I need to carry on proving, working hard in training and showing what I can do to the manager.
“The manager (Slot) is very important to me and he gives me a lot, I would say. After training, he always gives me the right things.”
