Antonio Gibson Sends Message To Rest Of League After Surprising Patriots Release

The [New England Patriots](https://nesn.com/new-england-patriots) released Antonio Gibson on Monday after he spent two seasons with the team.

Gibson signed a three-year, $11.25 million deal with the Patriots before the 2024 season. He had 744 scrimmage yards and one touchdown for the Patriots in his first year. He was second on the team in scrimmage yards. Gibson tore his ACL last season and played in just five games. Coming off a major injury and a free agent, Gibson sent a message on Instagram following his release.

"Thank you to the organization and the fans for the support and belief but the journey continues and the best is yet to come," Gibson wrote on Instagram.

Gibson still thinks he has plenty left in the tank, and let the rest of the league know when he said, "the best is yet to come." He is a well-rounded running back who can contribute in the passing game. He has 197 receptions and 1,495 receiving yards in his career.

Despite a solid first season with the Patriots, the team still invested in a running back early in the draft. The Patriots selected TreVeyon Henderson in the second round of last year's draft, and after Gibson went down, Henderson ended up becoming a great player for the Patriots.

Henderson's emergence likely played a role in the Patriots' decision to release Gibson. However, Henderson did not play great in the playoffs, and keeping Gibson would have given the Patriots three solid options in the backfield.

It's unclear if Gibson will be ready for Week 1, but he can be a solid addition to any backfield. He has 3,287 career rushing yards and 24 rushing touchdowns. He was a 1,000-yard rusher in 2021, when he actually got a chance at being the top option in the Washington Commanders' backfield.
