The Warriors continue to get bad Kristaps Porzingis injury updates, and as a free agent, the trade for him looks more like an ill-fated move.

The Golden State Warriors made the trade deadline move for Kristaps Porzingis for two reasons: one, to add some rim-protection and shooting around franchise star Stephen Curry, and two, finally end the long and dramatic Jonathan Kuminga saga.

But now weeks after the NBA trade deadline, Porzingis has played just one game for the Warriors, and is currently on the injury report set to miss at least the team’s next two gameswith an illness.

While the reasons for trading Kuminga were obvious, swapping him and Buddy Hield for Porzingis is continuing to look more and more like a risky move, especially because the Latvian big manis set to hit unrestricted free agency this summer.

Writing for Bleacher Report, Andy Bailey named Porzingis as Golden State’s biggest ‘free agency flight risk’ this offseason, as he is in the final season of his current two-year, $60 million contract.

There was likely an expectation and agreement between both he and the Warriors that after the trade, he would resign with the team, but there’s no guarantee of that,as well as no guarantee he’ll live up to the expectations the franchise has for the constantly injured big man.

Warriors Continue To Get Bad Kristaps Porzingis News

Along with Porzingis playing just one game and now out for a few more, just based on what they moved and expect to get out of him, that hasn’tbeen reached so far.

Golden State knew the risk that came with trading for the stretch-five who hasn’t played in more than 65 regular-season games in nearly a decade, and with that, they took a huge flyer on making the trade deadline deal for him.

“Golden State acquired KP, counting on him to help the Warriors make some kind of run with Curry, which was already a long shot, even if he were already healthy (and could stay that way),” Jordanna Clark wrote for BlueManHoop.com. “The optimism that they had from [his first and only] game, even though it was a loss, was wiped away when they learned he’d miss Sunday’s contest.”

Additionally, in what was a bitter twist of fate, in the Warriors’ latest game against the Denver Nuggets, offseason addition and Porzingis’ former teammate, Al Horford, finallyhad the type of performance Golden Statewas waiting for. He hasn’t been healthy for multiple stretches this season, but after putting up 22 points on 6/7 shooting from deep, along with seven assists, it was one of his best showings of the season.

But while those types of games hadn’t come often for Horford, it is the exact reason why the Warriors made the trade deadline move for Porzingis.

It’s been an unlucky year for Golden State so far, and as they can’t get a healthy or consistent lineup together in the most important stretch of the season, it feels as though the ill-fated franchise will continue that trend in the final third of the year.

But what remains top of mind for the Warriors, regardless ofhis availability or play, is hoping toget Porzingis to resign on the most team-friendly deal possible this summer as an unrestricted free agent.

Losing him for nothing would be a major blunder, and while Kuminga wasn’t adding much in his final stint with the team, they need all the help they can get around Curry, even if Porzingis can’t consistentlybe counted on to be healthy.

Warriors’ Injury Updates On Curry, Porzingis And More

At this point in the season, the Warriors are dealing with several injuries that could spell disaster for the rest of the year if things don’t change.

Most notable of the group currently listed on the injury report is Curry, who is dealing with what the team described as Runner’s Knee. After not playing since late January, a new Curry injury update points to the franchise staris set to miss another few games, and that could go even longer if the team continues to struggle and drop in the standings.

The latest Porzingis injury update shows, he is outwith an illness, set to miss at least the Warriors’ next two games. According to team insider Anthony Slater, heis not traveling on their upcoming road trip, and could be out for longer, only adding to the sting of his appearance in just one game since his trade deadline acquisition.

Golden State also has Draymond Green, De’Anthony Melton, and Horford listed as questionable for the Tuesday night contest against the New Orleans Pelicans, all with minor injuries.

Draymond Green, Al Horford and De’Anthony Melton are questionable for the Warriors tomorrow night in New Orleans on the front side of a back-to-back. They’re at Memphis on Wednesday. Kristaps Porzingis out with illness. Didn’t make the trip.

Seth Curry, LJ Cryer, and Jimmy Butler are also out for the time being. The injuries to the former two have kept them out for decent stretches, but there is still hope they can return at some point during the regular season to add some much-needed depth in the backcourt. As for Butler, he is set to miss the rest of the season and potentially longer after suffering the brutal ACL tear in January.

In what is another interesting twist to the Warriors’ season, Kuminga is listed as questionable to make his debut for the Atlanta Hawks against the Wizards. Until he plays and shows his true potential in his new home, the franchise will not fully understand the extent to which the Porzingis trade was either a win for them or a risk that wasn’t worth taking.
