Detroit Lions to Play 2026 Regular-Season Game in Munich, Germany: First International Contest in Over a Decade
Lions president and CEO Rod Wood released an enthusiastic statement:
“We are thrilled to be playing internationally and specifically in Munich for the 2026 season. As an organization, we have invested greatly in the German market and are excited to play in front of our passionate German fans.”
This marks the Lions’ return to international play after two previous games at London’s Wembley Stadium:
October 26, 2014: Lions (home) defeated the Atlanta Falcons.
November 1, 2015: Lions (away) lost to the Kansas City Chiefs.
Amon-Ra St. Brown Connection to Germany
The game carries extra significance for Lions star wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown, whose mother, Miriam, is from Cologne, Germany. St. Brown has frequently visited Germany as a child and has expressed eagerness to play in front of German fans. He is expected to be a focal point of the team’s international marketing efforts.
The Munich game is part of the NFL’s continued global expansion, following successful international matches in Germany (Munich and Frankfurt) in recent years. The league has seen strong fan support and growing viewership in the German market.
What This Means for the Lions
First Munich game in franchise history.
Opportunity to expand the Lions’ international brand.
