The Miami Dolphins enter the 2026 season with a new general manager in Jon-Eric Sullivan and a new head coach in Jeff Hafley.
They might also have a new starting quarterback.
Speaking at the NFL Combine in Indianapolis, Sullivan told reporters that they’re keeping their options open with Tua Tagovailoa, including a potential trade.
Dolphins GM Jon-Eric Sullivan on Tua Tagovailoa status “everything is on table, including possibility of a trade.”
Sully said Tua hasn’t requested a trade. As we’ve noted, Dolphins are in process of finding new franchise QB & team preference is a trade over a release. We’ll see. pic.twitter.com/p6aiKUrRSb

Tagovailoa, 27, has three years remaining on a four-year, $212.4 million deal. His cap hit for 2026 is $56.267 million.
“We’re evaluating the entire roster, right?” Sullivan said. “As it pertains to Tua, I know that question is coming, so I’ll just get ahead of the curve - we’ve had conversations with Tua, his representation. Everything is on the table, including the potential of a trade.”
Sullivan, who had been a member of the Green Bay Packers front office for over two decades, said that they were not far along in the process, but he was complimentary of former Texas quarterback Quinn Ewers, who started three games for the team in the stead of Tagovailoa in the final weeks of the season.
“We don’t know which way that’s gonna go,” Sullivan said. “There’s a lot of different factors at play, a lot of conversations being had, but in evaluating the roster, Quinn did a nice job at the end of the year. [We’re] excited about what’s ahead for him. Tua, I thought, even though things didn’t go well at the end of the year, did some good things along the way. And it’s my job to infuse competition into that room and every other room as we go down the road.”
A native of Ewa Beach, HI, Tagovailoa heads into his seventh NFL season after being taken with the fifth overall selection of the 2020 NFL Draft out of Alabama.
The lefty’s career has been marred by a series of injuries and has incurred four documented concussions. He has also missed game time with finger injuries, rib fractures, a shoulder injury and hip injury.
In 78 career games, Tagovailoa has thrown for 18,166 yards on 1,647-for-2,421 passing with 120 touchdowns and 59 interceptions.
